CENTRAL LIBRARY DEVOLOPEMENT COMMITTEE

INTRODUCTION

The Central Library of Asutosh College started in the year 1916 with the foundation of Asutosh College, established as South Suburban College and later renamed as Asutosh College in memory of Sir Asutosh Mukherjee. The Central Library was subsequently renovated in the present form, and recently dedicated to Kaviguru Rabindranath Tagore in the year 2011, to commemorate his 150th Birth Anniversary that took place on September 6. Since the very beginning, Asutosh College Central Library has been catering to the needs of our undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers, and faculty and staff members of the various departments and centres.

The Library is having a collection of more than 50,000 thousands books, subscribing about 20+ print journals/periodicals, and providing access to over 500 hundredmagazines and several abstracting databases. The collection of the Central Library consists of Books, Back-volumes of Periodicals, Reports, Historical data and CD-ROM/DVD-ROM Databases and Audiovisual materials. The Library is located on the ground floor of the Main Building. The Central Library has a circulation section, reading room, reference section, new arrivals section, reprographic section, newspaper reading section, technical section, periodicals and magazine section, Asutosh Corner, and an archive. We are also enlisted in N-LIST – the Project entitled National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content providing access to selected e-resources for higher studies and research. The N-LIST project provides access to e-resources to students, researchers and faculty members. The Central Library also provides remote access to students and researchers.  

OBJECTIVES

  • To widen the existing knowledge of the students and the researchers.
  • To make resources easily available to the students and the readers.
  • To encourage the intellectual practice of reading and learning.
  • To increase discoverability of the question-seeking mind.
  • To continuously develop library services that incorporate both physical and virtual collections.  

INFRASTRUCTURE

  • Main Building: Central Library

Total area: Central Library (Main Building): 2990 sq. ft.
Total seating capacity: 70
Working hours: The library remains open from Monday to Friday from 11.30 am to 05.00 pm, and from 11am to 2pm on Saturdays. It also remains open during the summer recess.
Layout: The Central Library has a circulation section, reading room, reference section, new arrivals section, reprographic section, newspaper reading section, technical section, periodicals and magazine section, Asutosh Corner, and an archive.

  • ACTC Building: Reading Library

Total area: Reading library (ACTC Building): 2100 sq. ft.

Total seating capacity: 70

Working hours: The library remains open on Monday to Saturday. The service time is from 11.45am to 04.30 pm. It also remains open during the summer recess.

Layout: The Reading Library (ACTC Building) has a separate reading room, Braille Book section, magazine section, Web OPAC facility, e-resource browsing section, weeded out book section.

  • Centenary Building: Centenary Library

       Total area: Centenary library (Centenary Building): 2500sq. ft.
Total seating capacity: 20
Working hours: The library remains open on Monday to Saturday. The service time is from 11.00am to 05.00 pm. It also remains open during the summer recess.
Layout: In the Centenary Building there exists the Centenary library with the facilities of circulation, e-Library, Reading Room, Reprographic System, magazines.

  • Second Campus (Bhasa)

Approximately two thousand books will be sent very soon for the proposed library.

  • Total holding of books as per Accession Register are 50971 as on31/05/2016.28927books have been incorporated under Web-OPAC through data entry, some are yet to be processed& remaining have been weeded out.
  • Total holding of Journals & Magazines are 500(approx.) and also subscribed directly by individual seminar libraries (departmental libraries).
  • Total holding of CDs & DVDs are 100 (approx.).
  • Total holding of News Papers are Five (Four Daily & One Weekly).

E-RESOURCES

  • N-LIST: The Project entitled ‘National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content (N-LIST)’ provides access to selected          e-resources to colleges. The N-LIST project provides access to e-resources to students, researchers and faculty from colleges through server(s) installed at the INFLIBNET Centre. The authorized users from colleges can now access e-resources and download articles required by them directly from the publisher's website once they are duly authenticated as authorized users through servers deployed at the INFLIBNET Centre. Presently it is a collection of more than 3 crore e-books, thousands of e-journals and databases.
  • Open Access Resources (OAR): A large amount of Open Access Resources ranging e-books, e-journals and databases are available through our Library portal.

LIBRARY FACILITIES & SERVICES (Campus Wise)

  • Circulation
  • All current members of the college, whether faculty, student or staff, substantive or part-time, are entitled to borrow books from the library.
  • UG (Hons.) and PG students are issued three library cards:

(i) Borrowing Card (ii) Reading Card and (iii) Seminar Library Card and General of UG Students are issued two library cards (i) Borrowing Card and (ii) Reading Card from Central Library.

  • Students can borrow two books at a time using his/her borrowing card for 15 days, after which they may get books reissued or return the same.
  • Reading Room Facility

Large, spacious and well maintained reading spaces are attached in Central library, Reading library and in Library of Centenary Building.

  • Reference

All our members, students, faculty and staff can use journals, magazines, newspapers, reference books through our reference services.

  • Reprography

Photocopying service is rendered through copiers and printers.

  • Library Automation

Library software was installed for library automation that was developed by the Computer Science Department of Asutosh College. Web address of Asutosh College Library System is http://www.accskol.in for OPAC (online public access catalogue) facilities.

  • Internet

The Library is well connected with internet facility with the broadband speed of 4mbps and Wi-Fi facility is also available to cater to the needs of our users.

  • e – Library

All our members, students, faculty and staff can use e-library at Centenary Building library which has a seating capacity for 15 users, though currently only 8 desktop computers for our e-library have been installed.

  • Journals & Magazines

The Library provides the facility of browsing International, national and popular periodicals to keep our users abreast of the latest developments and information.

  • Newspapers

Library procures five newspapers.

  • Feedback Mechanism

At the entry to the library there is a suggestion box for gathering feedback from the users' community and email and telephone nos. have been displayed for the same purpose.

  • Digitalized rare Books

LIBRARY HOURS

The Library remains open Monday to Friday 11.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. and Saturday 11.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. (except Sundays & Holidays). It remains open during the summer recess also to facilitate library resource utilization.
