Activities

Since its establishment in the year 1925, the Department of Zoology, Asutosh College has been fostering young minds by critical thinking, learning and also motivating them to edify their disposition with adherence to the vision of Sir Asutosh Mukherjee. In pursuit of providing academic and scholastic ambiance, the Department has always provided the best teaching facilities to the students. Its academic achievement lies in nurturing the creativity and scholarly abilities of all students and preparing them to study further at the national and even international levels.

The Department of Zoology had started teaching Honours in the year 1973 and went a step further with the Post graduation course in Zoology in 2009 to further widen the horizon. Both the UG and PG departments follow syllabus as per The University of Calcutta (Under CBCS Curriculum). At the UG level, we co-ordinate with other UG Departments viz. IFF (Major), Botany, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Environmental Science (Honours) by teaching Zoology as a generic elective paper. While at the PG level, we conduct classes for CBCC in Zoology for students enrolled in the Environmental Science Department.

Apart from regular funding, the PG Department is also sponsored by DST-FIST and we are also having facilities supported by the State level DBT in the form of DBT BOOST laboratory to enhance research facilities in the Department. Latest education technologies including smart class room facilities, research culture, enriching digital library, interdisciplinary teaching exposure through inter-departmental and inter-institutional collaborations are rigorously followed in this department.

The department has a long standing history and legacy of sharing knowledge across various interactive platforms like Seminars, Workshops and Lecture series involving renowned experts from various Institutes and Universities. It has also successfully organized several Conferences in association with reputed Institutes like The Asiatic Society, Society of Medical Arthropodology, National Academy of Vector Borne Diseases to name a few. Conference has been organized with the financial assistance received from the Dept of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal, ICMR, DRDO etc. Faculty members of this Department have made notable contributions at the National and International Levels including representing INDIA at WHO organized International Meeting in the pre pandemic situation and have also made research contributions in the form of publications in esteemed journals both before and even during this pandemic. They have also successfully completed several UGC, DST (WB Govt) and DST SERB projects.

The Department aims to nurture the students and transform them into competent graduates and post graduates who succeed personally, professionally and serve locally, regionally and globally. We are proud followers of the footsteps of our beloved founder and will continue to surge ahead with lasting commitment and strengthened fervor.

To engage the beautiful minds of our students in self musing to unfurl their positive energies the Department also has a special wing “Sans entrave”. The students are engaged in various co-curricular activities as a part of this Initiative.
