About Prakalpa

INTRODUCTION

The Kanyashree Prakalpa is a unique initiative undertaken by the Government of West Bengal to improve the life and status of girl students. The purpose of this project is to provide financial support which helps them to pursue higher education and empower them for future. When the scheme was launched it was restricted only for the under-privileged and economically backward girl child i.e. girl’s family income should not exceed annually Rs.120000. But at present income bar has been removed and every girl child gets the benefit of the scheme if she remains unmarried and continues her education.

The Department of Women Development and Social Welfare, Government of West Bengal (DWD&SW) had designed and implemented the Kanyashree Prakalpa in the year 2013. The purpose of the scheme is to educate girl child and prevent child marriage until they reach the legal age of marriage. This conditional cash transfer scheme aims to improve the status and well-being of the girl child. As Child marriage has a negative impact on life of a girl, this scheme is helping out them to get rid of the problem and improve their health (especially facilitate the prevention of infant and maternal mortality) as well as educational status and move towards the empowerment of the girls who belongs to this State. This project brings immense benefits for the larger society as a whole.

THE BEGINNING

The Project started in our college on the very first day of when the project was implemented by the state government. The project runs in our college under the leadership of Dr. Rina Kar (Dutta), Associate Professor of Philosophy.

OBJECTIVES

  • The first and foremost aim is to prevent child marriage
  • Provide financial help and make enrollment of more girls in higher education
  • Reduce dropout from school
  • Reduce dependency on parents for continuing education
  • Empower the girl child and make her a strengthen pillar of society

DETAILS OF KANYASHREE PRAKALPA

Girl students whose age between 13 to 18 get annual scholarship and girl students age between 18 years to 19 years are eligible for getting a one-time grant of Rs. 25,000/- (Rupees Twenty five thousand only) if she remains unmarried and continues her studies.

STUDENTS DATABASE

The girl students of Asutosh College have also benefitted from the scheme. It has immensely helped the girl students who are economically backward. They can continue their studies which will help to empower them in the society. This scheme improves their educational status as well as their well-being.
