INTRODUCTION

Asutosh College has a students’ canteen for more than 60 years, which is stationed in a room on the third floor of the main building of the college. Initially, it had a kitchen setup along with seating arrangement for 16 students at a time, but it was revamped in the year 2009 when the college made a permanent arrangement for seating of 100 students at a time at the terrace under shed in front of the canteen room. The canteen used to serve Indian snacks and tea at subsidized prices to the students. However, the increased seating capacity helped the canteen to upgrade its menu. Presently the canteen serves Indian, Chinese and Continental snacks, tea, coffee and aerated soft drinks. There is a statue of Swami Vivekananda and a sitting area in front of it. The canteen committee has organized cultural programmes at different times to encourage the interest of young generation to participate in it which they can also enjoy at their snack times. This place also provides a place for communication between the students outside the class. Last but not the least is that the canteen place partially fulfils the need of an open space which we do not have in our main building.
