FUNDAMENTALS OF PSYCHOLOGY, COMMUNITY INTERVENTION AND LIFE STYLE MANAGEMENT

Objective of the course: To introduce students to the basic concepts of the subject and its applications. Concepts of community psychology and its interdisciplinary approaches to the society. Understanding healthy life style, concept of wellbeing and its management.

  • Total structure of the course: 4 modules; Module 1 and 2 for first 3 months and Module 3 and 4 for last 3 months.
  • In each Module there are 5 units

About the course: This 6-month certificate course is said to have a great value. This is a fundamental course, which will provide basic concepts and wide application of the subject across the society. In this course we are trying to provide a wide and global concept of psychology. These enriched contents will groom students’ personality, and help to become a good thinker, responsible citizen as well.  This course will also help the students to opt for higher courses in the same or related field. He or she may opt their career option as a school counsellor, clinical psychologists, community psychologists, life style management mentor and so on.

On completion of this 6 month in-depth certificate course one will be able to :

  1. Have a clear understanding of the fundamental concepts of the domain of Psychology along with its practical implications.
  2. Have a better perspective of perceiving oneself as well as the other institutions of the society at large from the standpoint of Community Psychology. One shall be able to able to understand, analyse & plan interventions aimed at the different stakeholders of the society at large.
  3. The course aims at providing a clear cut understanding of the facets of counselling & its nuances. An in-depth understanding of it shall enable one to not only be better in terms of managing their interpersonal relationships in the personal life but even at the workplace. Especially the segment of special counselling shall empower one to be better with diversity management both at the personal as well as at the professional level.
  4. At the finest level this course will empower one to understand oneself the best, make amends of ones’ behavioural manifestations , understand the significance of mindful living practices ( at home & even at work). It would also teach one the relevance of how music acts as one of the most crucial ways of contributing positively to mental health outcomes.
  5. It would also empower one to understand ones’ journey of embracing positivity & spirituality as ones’ way of life.

Module 1: Introduction to Psychology:

25 periods. (3 hours per week)

Unit 1: Introduction to psychology. Perspective of different schools. Different scopes and branches and methods. Brief concept of biological bases of behaviour and methods of psychology.

Unit 2: concept and definition of personality. Different theories of personality (brief overview). Concepts and types of personality assessment.

Unit 3: concept of human development. Brief discussion on different types of human development. Role of heredity and environment and the concept of disability.

Unit 4: Introduction to abnormal psychology. Brief overview on neurosis, psychosis and psychosomatic disorders.

Unit 5: Concept of mental health and wellbeing. Role of mental health professionals.  Short introduction on counselling, guidance and psychotherapy.

Module 2: Community psychology and family: Introduction to intervention

25 Periods : (3 hours per week)

Unit 1: Introduction to community psychology and community mental health. Understanding mental health and illness. Epidemic of mental health problems in India. Prevention of mental health problems at community level and community-based rehabilitation.

Unit 2: Community based interventions for Physical health. Health condition across life span. Determinants of health seeking behaviour, prevention and intervention. Health policies in India (physical health)

Unit 3: Community based intervention for children with disability and developmental disorders. Brief introduction, Models of Disability. WHO IFC Model. Early intervention and community-based intervention for the creation of a disability friendly environment. Important interventions and national policies on disability. Role of community stakeholders in the disability management.

Unit 4: Community based intervention for the elderly. Brief introduction. Epidemiology of global elderly population. Elderly population in India. Role of elderly people in family, mental health for elderly people, role of psychologist in addressing issues of elderly people. Positive aging. Latest legislative measures in India. Senior citizen act (MWPSE) 2007.

Unit 5: Causes and prevention: Child marriage, child labour, domestic violence, sexual abuse, cyber bulling, suicide and its related act, POCSO, RPWD act, Mental Health Act, National Trust Act. Role of mental health professionals.

Module 3: Counselling and its understanding.

25 Periods:( 3 hours per week)

Unit1: concept, types, process of counselling. Difference between counselling and guidance. Role of counsellor.

Unit 2: Assessment in counselling. Different approaches to counselling in brief. (psychodynamics, Behavioural, Rogerian, Existential)

Unit 3: Guidance and counselling in education and career:  Introduction, concepts and relation among interest, aptitude, ability. Process of vocational/career counselling. Distinction between vocational/career counselling and vocational/career guidance. Brief account of career counsellor’s role and a career counsellor, and its application.

Unit 4: Counselling for family and marriage and grief: Introduction, concept, types of family.  Premarital Counselling, marriage counselling, counselling with parents, parenting style, child rearing practice, Counselling with family concerning with children. Grief counselling.

Unit 5: Special Areas in Counselling: introduction, counselling for

  • weaker section and minorities
  • women empowerment
  • alcohol abuse
  • Internet addiction
  • LGBTQIA+ community
  • Rehabilitation   and counselling the legal offenders, victim of abuse and violence.

Module 4: Positivity and Life Style Management

25 Periods: (3 hours per week)

Unit 1: Life Style

  • How lifestyle affects one’s quality of life 
  • Food: not only how much, but to also answer the important questions of what to eat, when
    to eat, and how to eat
  • Drink: What and how much
  • Sleep: when and where → How much is too much?
  • Physical relation: Touch → How important is it? It is important to know yourself.

Unit 2: Breathing

  • Why Pranayama is important
  • How it affects the heart
  • How it affects our blood flow
  • What is Deep Breathing?
  • What is a belly breather?
  • What are the 4 types of breathing?

Unit 3: Music as therapy

  • Basic concept and relation between Brain Waves and Music
  • Breathing and Heart Rate
  • State of Mind and Music
  • Music and its benefits
  • Music Therapy, relation between music and state of wellbeing

Unit 4: Colour Therapy

  • Brief introduction and its Techniques
  • Relation between mental wellbeing and colour

Unit 5: Positivity and Spirituality

  • Concept and relation with positive self
  • Silence, bliss, gratitude, forgiveness, wisdom, Transcendence and Spirituality
